How We Evaluate
Filament Lab is a research-based site. We build every spec claim from filament manufacturer technical data sheets (TDS) and printer manufacturer published specifications — nozzle/bed temperature ranges, drying parameters, build volumes, kinematics class, and firmware speed ceilings — rather than running our own print farm. This page explains exactly how that research translates into what you read.
What we do
- Cross-reference manufacturer TDS sheets across multiple brands per material to find a realistic aggregated range, rather than quoting a single brand's number as universal.
- Separate a firmware/motion-system speed ceiling from a realistic, quality-checked print speed — the single most misleading number in 3D printer marketing.
- Name an honest drawback on every product we mention — no pick is presented as flawless.
- Use Amazon SEARCH links only (never a specific ASIN), tagged for our Associates account, so listings stay current instead of linking to a possibly discontinued product page.
What we don't do
- We do not publish prices or star ratings — both change constantly and neither reflects spec accuracy.
- We do not make health, safety-certification, or food-safety claims beyond reporting manufacturer ventilation guidance and the general fact that FDM parts are not certified food-safe.
- We do not invent ASINs, exact prices, or specifications not traceable to a manufacturer source.
- We do not run a print farm or claim hands-on testing of every product mentioned — our research is spec- and documentation-based, and we say so plainly.
Corrections and versioning
Manufacturers update TDS sheets and printer firmware regularly. When a spec changes or we find an error, we update the relevant page (and the dataset CSV, where applicable) in place and bump the version/date shown on that page. See The 3D Printing Numbers for our versioned dataset's own methodology section.
