Why PLA fails first
It isn't melting — it's creep. PLA gets soft enough to deform well below boiling-water temperature, so a part under any load (suction-cup mounts, clips under tension) slowly gives way in interior heat that other materials shrug off. It's also the most brittle common material under impact, a bad combination for anything in a door pocket or glovebox.
The printing cost of the tougher materials
PETG is the free upgrade: no enclosure needed, prints on stock budget machines, just dry it if the spool has sat open (why drying matters). ABS and ASA are the committed step: both are high-shrinkage materials that need an enclosure to avoid warping and layer splitting (enclosure guide), ventilation for fumes, and a hotend that isn't already at its ceiling — a PTFE-lined heat break tops out around 240–250°C, which is exactly where these materials live.
